She helped me face fear caused by past pregnancy losses and mentally prepare for a peaceful birth. When the time came she was responsive and calming. April provided amazing birth support. She observed the natural dynamic between me and my husband and allowed space for him while making sure I always had what I needed. After delivery my baby was unexpectedly taken to the NICU. Because of April we had discussed this unlikely possibility before birth and had a plan – my husband went with the baby and April stayed with me. I’ve never needed loving support more than I did in that moment and I am thankful every day that April was there. She advocated for me and my baby, asking to get a breast pump in the labor and delivery room. I would never have thought to do that on my own but because of April I pumped colostrum that was taken to the NICU and set up a pumping schedule so that my baby never needed formula supplementation. Finally, April captured memories of the day with beautiful birth photography. Never once in labor did I notice a camera. April was always there when I needed her, but also somehow captured amazing images. I will treasure the memories of my birth experience and those photographs forever. I was looking for a local doula who was warm, reassuring, supportive, and vaccinated (we delivered during the peak of Omicron) and she was a great fit for us. Thanks to April, I was able to have the birth experience I wanted – mostly laboring at home and then an epidural-free delivery at a hospital. My husband also really appreciated April as he felt the pressure lifted of being the one and only support person, and he was able to enjoy the birth experience as well.
